Do you need them?

That depends.  The less feeling that you have in your feet and the more swelling, the more use specialty diabetic socks will be to you.

The qualities of a great sock for diabetics, in order of importance:

1. Comfort! – This is the only quality that you need as long as you  inspect your feet thoroughly every day.  Extra padding helps.  Look for the lack of irritating seams. Tube socks are not recommended because of their sloppy fit.
2. Controls Moisture – Diabetics are susceptable to foot funguses and infections. Dry feet is the goal.  Cotton, wool, or synthetic fibers all work well.  Wear whatever is the most comfortable.   However, if you have sweaty feet from sports play or heavy physical activity, better skin moisture control is had with synthetic fibers like acrylic.

4. Anti-Bacterial – To discourage foot infections, every little bit helps.
5. Style and Looks – Its OK to wear some other color than white!  White is only recommended when noticing weeping wounds is a concern. The extent of swelling from foot to knee determines recommended diabetic sock height. Diabetic “footies” to knee socks can be found.

All socks perform an important skin protection function. Any sock is better than no socks and barefeet. Diabetics may not become aware immediately of foot injuries needing care., so a layer of protection is vital.
